I had to explain to a friend recently what the term “cooked” meant. Not in the traditional sense of “I cooked a ham for my six cats” but “I think we’re cooked,” the modern definition; the Urban Dictionary definition.
My slogan on Cookin’ with Congress is “Politics is cooked.” And I had a hard time in the past week feeling like anyone would want to get behind this cheeky-but-sincere slogan and what it stood for. People are angry. People are scared. People are elated. People are vindictive. People are most certainly taking politics seriously and that’s normal and important. Why the hell would anyone want someone to come in holding a plate of culinary horror and say “hey, no matter which side you like, they’re all* wackos and here’s the edible proof.”
I was wrong. People still want to see Nancy Pelosi eat a month’s worth of chocolate in one day. They still want to see frosted toothpaste nuts. And judging by viewership, they REALLY still want to see if JFK ate like a normal human being in the White House (answer: almost too normal — it’s on YouTube too). Throughout this entire blog/series/account/project/unhinged exploration of our unhinged politicians, I’ve been wrong.
That’s how I got to 100,000 followers on TikTok, which I want to celebrate for a sec. It’s a fun milestone and a testament to how wrong I was, thinking at so many points along the way “no one else cares about this weird topic except me.” What a fantastic way to be proven silly. Obviously, a deep down part of me knew I had something, but I also was ready to just recreate congressional recipes for the next 50 years for fun and for free.
YOU made this expansive and more interesting; even more fun and yes, even more free. Thank you. That’s the whole post this week. Just a thank you. I’ve got big exciting things coming this year in 2025 that we’ll get to share in — live events, new series, collaborations, etc. Maybe I’ll even live the dream and get sponsored by Jello.
For now, I’m going to celebrate 100K with a mayonnaise cake covered in ketchup frosting.
Stay safe and fun out there,
-Bennett
