Today is the greatest holiday the world has ever known — that’s right, it’s Presidents’ Day, the one day every year where, finally, U.S. presidents have the power.
In truth, Presidents’ Day IS actually one of my favorite holidays precisely because it celebrates those socios who’ve run our country for a quarter millennium. There has always been something hilarious and fascinating and horrifying about U.S. presidents through time, and Presidents’ Day is their holiday. Sure, it technically celebrates George Washington first and foremost, but I took it upon myself when I was 6 years old to make sure I included all of them in my “celebration.”
Ever since I was a kid, I was obsessed with presidential history and as I’ve grown, that has clearly not changed. Through the years on Presidents’ Day (before Cookin’ with Congress), I’d share the three craziest facts I learned about U.S. presidents. As you can imagine, LBJ had a whole year to himself after I read the Caro books.
I thought I’d bring back that tradition here.
Three wild facts I learned in 2024, and two presidential recipes I haven’t yet made on CwC:
Wild Fact #1 - George H.W. Bush drank 10 cups of coffee every single day while in office. It wasn’t until he was diagnosed with a thyroid disorder that he decided to cut back.
Wild Fact #2 - Calvin and Grace Coolidge kept a pet raccoon named Rebecca at the White House. Learned this thanks to Plodding Through the Presidents, and an additional detail from historian Sarah Morgan — the raccoon was originally sent to the Coolidges for them to EAT.
Wild Fact #3 - Bill Clinton was put on a very strict diet in the White House to make him lose weight. The actual diet was not revealed until years later (thank you to Alex Prud’homme and his book Dinner with the President, a favorite of mine). Maybe I’l go on this diet for a week for fun??
Two recipes from U.S. presidents that I’ve not yet made; you can be the judge of which of the two is the more unhinged option.
Ronald Reagan’s Mac & Cheese
1⁄2 lb. macaroni
1 tbsp butter
1 egg beaten
1 tbstp salt
1 tbsp dry mustard
3 cups sharp grated cheese
1 cup milk
Boil macaroni in water until tender and drain thoroughly. Stir in butter and egg. Mix mustard and salt with 1 tablespoon hot water and add to milk. Add cheese leaving enough to sprinkle on top. Pour into buttered casserole, add milk, sprinkle with cheese. Bake at 350° for about 45 minutes or until custard is set and top is crusty.
Bennett’s note: Looks like dry mustard is Ronald Reagan’s secret favorite ingredient. You’ll also find it in his cavity-causing cranberry sauce. Also…”custard?”
James Monroe’s Mock Turtle Soup
1 pint black beans
4 quarts cold water
1/2 pound of beef, plus 1 shinbone
1/2 pound salt pork
2 onions, chopped
2 carrots, grated
1 small red pepper pod
3 hard-cooked
eggs, sliced
12 thin slices of lemon
Salt
Coarse black pepper
Pick over beans; add water and soak overnight. Add meat, vegetables, and seasonings; simmer 4 to 5 hours. Remove meat. When cool, dice the meat and return to the kettle. Puree soup through a colander; reheat. Serve with a slice of egg and a slice of lemon in each cup or bowl. Makes 12 servings.
Bennett’s Note: I’ve had snapping turtle soup before (remember, I’m from ruraburban Pennsylvania) and have no idea how beef and a shinbone get you close. Slice of lemon and hardboiled egg sure is fascinating as a soup garnish.
The Weekly Recap
Ate like a data analyst from Michigan’s 6th district — I’m discovering I eat more fruit than most Americans…
It was a big-time Abraham Lincoln week to celebrate his birthday, which meant eating just like ol’ Abe for a day. Man, that was kinda sad.
Also made corn dodgers, a favorite of Lincoln…equally sad. The man was a titan, but you can smell the depressive episodes through the cornmeal here. He dealt with a lot.
When you think cheesecake, you think of cheddar cheese, right?
VERY fun interview with JJ and Amy on one of the largest radio stations in North Dakota. You can listen to it here as well!
Enjoy Presidents’ Day. Hopefully you have the day off at least. Pick a president you love/least-hate and go find the craziest thing about them or the best thing about them. Or drink an FDR martini. Or eat Ham Mousse. Do not do that. Let me know if you find any little known facts worth sharing.
Stay fun out there,
-Bennett
Memorial Day, Veterans Day, and Independence day Brainwashing.
When people join the military, they say they are just doing their job. The Mỹ Lai massacre was a good example of US soldiers just doing their job. So called military (heroes) that have murdered their brothers and sisters around the world are not moral people. Those who sign up for the military, leave morality behind. No difference than those charged at Nuremberg.

Just as the Milgram experiment shows. Men will kill other men just because someone with perceived power tells them to.
“Military men are just dumb, stupid animals to be used as pawns in foreign policy.” ― Henry Kissinger
Smedley Butler: https://www.azquotes.com/quote/43867 I served in all commissioned ranks from Second Lieutenant to Major-General. And during that period, I spent most of my time being a high class muscle-man for Big Business, for Wall Street and for the Bankers. In short, I was a racketeer, a gangster for capitalism.
Hermann Goering: “Why of course the people don't want war. Why should some poor slob on a farm want to risk his life in a war when the best he can get out of it is to come back to his farm in one piece? Naturally the common people don't want war: neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But after all it is the leaders of a country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy or fascist dictatorship, or a parliament or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the peace makers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.”
America’s Soldiers Did Not Fight or Die for Freedom
by https://www.fff.org/author/jacob-hornberger-2/
November 13, 2019
One of the sacred myths promulgated on Veteran’s Day by U.S. officials, especially those in the deep state (i.e., the Pentagon, the CIA, and the NSA), is that American soldiers have fought and died for freedom. It’s all false propaganda, however, as an examination of each foreign war in which U.S. soldiers have fought and died will easily show.
At the time of the Revolutionary war (when supposedly people fought for freedom because all men are created equal according to the Declaration of Independence)in the US. Slavery was in full swing and many of the so called founding fathers got rich off of the sweat and blood of those slaves. American natives were being slaughtered, and woman, non-landowners and nonwhites weren’t allowed to vote. Not to mention that people like George Washington only decided to go to war when British policies started effecting their ultra rich bank accounts. In other words business as usual in the USA. Yep it is and always has been the American way. by R.S.L.
The Spanish-American War. That war had nothing to do with protecting the freedom of the American people. It was all about converting the United States into an empire, one with colonies, just like the Spanish Empire and British Empire. Thus, U.S soldiers who fought and died in the Philippines were simply trying to suppress the Philippine independence movement, which never threatened the freedom of the American people.
World War I. Germany never attacked the United States. The U.S. government intervened in a European war with the aim of “making the world safe for democracy” and in the hope that U.S. intervention would make this the world’s final war, both of which were extremely foolhardy goals. In any event, American freedom was never at stake.
World War II. Neither Germany nor Japan wanted war with the United States. President Roosevelt maneuvered and cornered Japan into attacking the United States in order to give him a “back door” to entering the European conflict. The sole aim of the Japanese was to knock out the U.S. fleet at Hawaii, in the hope of preventing U.S. interference with its seizure of oil fields in the Dutch East Indies to fuel its war machine in Korea. Japan was never going to try to invade and conquer the United States. Meanwhile, Germany could not even cross the English Channel to invade England. American freedom was never at stake.
Korean War. This was nothing more than a civil war, one in which North Korea used force in an attempt to unify the country. American freedom was never at stake.
Vietnam War. This too was nothing more than a civil war, one in which North Vietnam used force in an attempt to unify the country. American freedom was never at stake.
Iraq War I and Iraq War II. Iraq never attacked the United States or even threatened to do so. American freedom was never at stake. “Operation Iraqi Freedom” didn’t even bring freedom to the Iraqi people, as demonstrated by the current dictatorial regime’s killing of Iraqi people for demonstrating against its corruption.
Afghanistan War. Afghanistan never attacked the United States or even threatened to do so. At worst, the Taliban regime had permitted accused terrorist Osama bin Laden to live there. American freedom was never at stake.
Syria. Syria has never attacked the United States or even threatened to do so. American freedom is not at stake.
Yemen. Yemen has never attacked the United States or even threatened to do so. American freedom is not at stake.
Although Americans were treated on Veteran’s Day to the standard propaganda that U.S. soldiers have fought, sacrificed, and died for freedom in America’s many foreign wars, the propaganda is patently false. U.S. soldiers, many of whom were conscripted, have fought, sacrificed, killed, and died for empire and intervention, both of which are contrary to the principles of a free society.
